Mr. Siauw is a new RN, and during his cross-training on Bravo 1, he was able to help the treatment team communicate with a patient in his native language.

The treatment team had utilized the translator line several times with minimal results. However, Mr. Siauw was able to establish rapport with the patient immediately, and the treatment team was able to obtain useful information to help facilitate the patient’s treatment.

The patient was offered and educated on various treatment modalities, and the patient was able to agree to some of them.

More importantly, Mr. Siauw was able to obtain the names of his sons, whom he had not seen or spoken to for many years. The treatment team was able to locate some pictures of his sons.

When the pictures were shown to the patient, he teared up and was very excited to inform the team that he was in one of the pictures with his sons.

The patient also voiced missing food from his native land. Mr. Siauw asked what his favorite dish was. The doctor asked if there was a restaurant nearby that would provide this dish, and the answer was no.

A day later, Mr. Siauw came back with the dish the patient had requested. He had cooked it himself and made sure he textured it to the patient’s dietary specifications.

The patient was very excited and ate every bit of it. This act of kindness made the patient very happy. We had not seen him smile that much since his admission two years ago.

The treatment team is very grateful to Mr. Siauw for the information they were able to obtain with his assistance.

Thank you, Riswanto G, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
