The DAISY Award for extraordinary nursing students was created to recognize and celebrate nursing students for the above and beyond care and compassion showed to patients and their families. Rita Karas is chosen to receive this award by all the faculty and meets the award criteria in the following ways:
Rita has a friendly and considerate demeanor that puts others at ease and makes them feel comfortable with the plan of care.
Rita is fair to all patients, providing equitable care no matter of patient's race, culture or religion, or any other patient situation.
Rita shows dedication to expand her knowledge base by taking on difficult patients and completed her preceptorship in the ED. Her preceptor stated many times her work ethic, dedication to the patients, and knowledge level were definitely at a high level.
Rita instinctively promotes patient human and legal rights and provides assistance in asserting those rights through patient self-promotion and empowerment, and is first and foremost, a patient advocate above all else.
Rita Karas excelled and thrived despite the hiccups of Covid, which was certainly disruptive in her education with a shortened clinical experience.
