Bob Funk, RN of 5East is being honored with a DAISY Award based on this nomination submission from his ANM, Margaret Davies, who wrote three examples:

(1) Earlier in 2010, we had a patient on 5 East, named Carl, he was here for placement. Carl refused to wear a patient gown, he insisted on wearing his own clothes. His personal hygiene was not great; Carl frequently spilled food on his clothes. Bob was successful in coercing Carl to change his clothes, he took the dirty ones home and washed them. Bob treated Carl with dignity and respect, which meant a great deal to the patient.

(2) Recently, we had a patient who came to the hospital for chemotherapy. Brittany was nineteen years old with a very aggressive form of cancer. She and her family built a strong rapport with Bob. They loved his cheerfulness and his positive attitude. His favorite phrase is “no worries”. The family often referred to him as “no worries Bob”. When Brittany was critically ill in the ICU, Bob would pop down there to visit on his break and lunch times. Before he left at the end of his shift, he would go and visit with the family. When Brittany passed away, the family invited Bob to her memorial service because they wanted to thank him.

(3) Nancy is a patient who comes in monthly for chemotherapy. In June of this year, she received out of the blue, a cancer diagnosis. When Nancy came to the hospital, she was very frightened; she hadn’t been hospitalized since the birth of her youngest child seventeen years ago. Her nurse that day was Bob. Nancy has never forgotten how much effort he put into trying to make her feel at ease, how much time he took explaining things to her, answering all her questions. Nancy still talks about that day and sings the praises of Bob.
