April 2025 Honoree
Robert Shaffer, BSN, RN
My father had been in and out of hospitals and assisted living facilities. When he was transferred to the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh, he was moved into the ICU a couple of times. While my dad was in the ICU he received exceptional care from the staff, however, Bob would always go above and beyond in my opinion to not only make sure my dad was comfortable, but to also make sure my Aunt and I understood the care he was receiving. Bob was friendly, kind, personable, compassionate, has a sense of humor, and was helpful both in-person and when I would call in to receive an update. During my dad's final day, Bob was very knowledgeable about how to spread out the medication so he would be in the least amount of discomfort as possible. Bob also requested oral drops instead of a tablet that he knew would not dissolve in my dad's mouth, given his condition at the time. Bob even offered to call my Aunt with updates if she wanted, so we could be aware of his status in his final few hours. Over the years, I have dealt with many nurses for both myself and other loved ones, and Bob is truly a standout nurse based on my experiences.
Thank you, Robert, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
