Our mother was flown to AGH after spending nine days in an eastern Ohio hospital where she walked in for an ablation and new pacemaker. She had complications after the procedure. Her heart stopped and she was resuscitated, a balloon pump was inserted. When the vent tube came out she couldn't swallow and had suffered a hematoma where the balloon pump was inserted which required another surgery. Bob Vance was her nurse in the CICU. Mom hadn't had much sleep over the ten days. Mom arrived at AGH on a Wednesday evening and we first met the next morning. We could tell that Bob was very compassionate. He asked her if he could do anything to make her feel better. She asked if he could wash her hair because it was almost two weeks since she had it washed. Bob asked my brother and me to leave the room. Bob washed her hair, gave her a backrub and massaged her scalp. When Bob came out to the waiting room he told us that we could come back to her room but only if we did not wake her. We stayed in the waiting room. I told my brother that he is treating her as if she was his mother. The next day Mom's doctors recommended a feeding tube to help strengthen her. She first refused but when Bob told her that he would put it in she said okay. Mom trusted him. The tube stayed in for four days. When Mom started her physical therapy she seemed to double her steps each day. We feel that the feeding tube definitely helped. Today mom is in a skilled rehab gaining strength each day working to get home. We certainly appreciate what Bob Vance and the whole AGH team has done for our mother.
