I spent nearly 1 month admitted having undergone multiple abdominal surgeries. During this time, I was cared for by wonderful staff and nurses. However, there was one nurse, Berta, who treated and cared for me beyond what is expected of a nurse. In addition, to excellent nursing skills, she freely gave encouragement, support, and at times a shoulder to cry on. Her time never felt rushed and cared for me with a sense of enjoyment and never as a job. The highlight of many of my days was waiting until 7 pm when Berta came in the room wanting to know how I was feeling and how my day was. With her arrival, I knew I was in good hands. I feel indebted to the care she provided me and this without needing to mention the breadsticks and chicken wings she shared with me.
