Roberta Pawlowski exemplifies excellence in critical care nursing in every way. Roberta has been a PICU nurse for almost 32 years here at The Children's Hospital. She is an amazing nurse: conscientious, thorough, a strong patient advocate, a meticulous practitioner and an outstanding critical caregiver and resource for others. She readily cares for any patient in the unit. Her care is family-centered. Roberta takes on the toughest aspects of patient care and advocacy with grace, poise, understanding, and compassion. She is always available to help other nurses in the unit and graciously accepts any patient assignment she is given. She willingly signs up for overtime when needed. Even though Roberta has been an ICU nurse for more than 30 years, she is still fun to talk to, personable, and positive to be around. She is reliable, dependable, and trusted by her colleagues and families alike.
Across Roberta's years in the PICU, she has willingly and conscientiously precepted a multitude of new staff. As Roberta precepts, she is thoughtful and kind - gently sharing her wealth of knowledge in an easy, low profile way that helps a new nurse settle into a new job with confidence. As a result, she is one of the most respected mentors in our unit. She leads by example as others notice her excellent care and conscientious attention to detail each day in the care her patients receive. Her quiet, approachable demeanor allows her to work well with families, colleagues, and providers.
As a level IV nurse, Roberta is our house-wide quality improvement representative for the PICU and is instrumental in unit based quality improvement initiatives also. Examples of recent quality improvement projects that Roberta coordinated are an initiative to decrease lab specimen labeling errors, staff education on the seven rights of medication administration and most recently, a project focused on improving the transfer process between units. Suffice it to say, we love working with Roberta. Our hope is that she stays here in the PICU at least another thirty years!
