I wanted to take a moment to reflect on an amazing nurse who went above and beyond today. I had a patient arrive at the ER in failing shape. Although he was coherent, he was septic, hypotensive, multisystem organ failure, etc. It was clear the patient was dying. He asked his wife to call his pastor and wanted to have the nurse Robin Deubell to come down to see him.
Robin happened to be off that day. He spoke highly of Robin and wanted to be sure that she was told that he loved her. Robin and the patient are not related, but she took such great care of him at a prior admission he was touched by her. I immediately called the 3T charge nurse and asked for Robin, but she was not here. The charge nurse contacted her, and Robin came up to see the patient at the bedside on her off time. She sat with the patient and family and held his hand. The patient was so happy to see her and told me that he had in fact, "Gained a new best friend and a great friend to my wife."
