DAISY Award Winner, 2013 Rochelle Nelson (6 Nominations) 1.) Being the 3A level coordinator is certainly a very challenging role at the College of Nursing. I have been privileged to work with her now for 3 and 1/2 years and have witnessed incredible consistency in her leadership through varied situations. Rochelle conveys a remarkable steadfastness when students have high anxiety beginning their nursing program and when instructors face complex problems. Her leadership also demonstrates facilitating clear communication among the Foundations of Clinical Practice, Nursing 331, team. Rochelle's nursing leadership embodies a caring and a humility that is exemplary. Having received the 0815 Monday phone call to resolve a clinical issue from the previous week, that caring approach was much appreciated. She has been a wonderful course coordinator and level coordinator. Amazingly, Rochelle Nelson is not just a rock- she's also flexible when needed. These responses are invaluable in the current sea of many changes in nursing education and in health care and the University of WI-Milwaukee is not only the better but also is blessed to have her efforts. 2.) As a dedicated leader, Rochelle's style is thoughtful, calm, and supportive. She creates an environment that fosters confidence, creativity, and personal growth among students, faculty, and staff. Rochelle provides outstanding support and assistance to academic staff that are new to a course or new to teaching. She communicates effectively and confidentially with level instructors to identify at risk students and then takes action to promote students' success. I have observed numerous interactions between Rochelle and UW-Parkside nursing students over that last 5 years. It is clear that students respect and trust her. Rochelle is a "presence" at UWP--she not only celebrates students' successes but she is available to support and counsel them when they struggle. It has been a privilege to work with Rochelle and I eagerly recommend her for the DAISY Faculty Award. 3.) Not only is Professor Nelson a great community health instructor, but she is also a great role model and leader. She is calm, collective and knows how to direct students in the right direction in times of struggles. 4.) Professor Nelson was our link between students and staff last semester. She met with us once a month to discuss issues we were having in classes and helped us find real solutions to the problems we were having. Professor Nelson also taught our Health Promotion class. She was always organized and accessible in and out of our class. SNAP (Student Nurses Association Parkside)is another activity she is actively involved with and is our go to person for ideas, activities, and help. I would definitely like to nominate Rochelle Nelson for an award. I appreciate all she has done for our nursing program and SNAP. Thank you for your consideration. 5.) Professor Nelson has been very helpful and encouraging during my nursing journey. She is very approachable, friendly and sweet. 6.) Professor Nelson is an excellent teacher, as exemplified by many years of receiving very high ratings on her course and teaching evaluations. I am nominating her because of her outstanding work with faculty development in her role as Level 3A Coordinator. Most semesters there are new faculty members assigned to the clinical course in this level, and each semester Professor Nelson gives both existing and new faculty members her full support in helping them to learn their roles and to develop and improve their teaching skills. However, her work with new faculty members is particularly noteworthy. She is in frequent contact with these instructors and attends their classes and/or clinical practica to provide support and guidance. The clinical sites for this clinical course tend to be schools, assisted living facilities, and even Boys & Girls clubs, and many new faculty are challenged by the lack of health care structure in these sites. Professor Nelson supports these instructors to develop creative ways to enhance student learning in these varied sites, and most new faculty quickly become confident and competent under her guidance. She is a master teacher who helps others to work toward this goal.
