August 2025 Honoree
Rock Creek MOHS Surgery
Crystal Duran, LPN • Yvonca Charette, HT • Cassandra Buzzard, RN
I am honored to commend these three professional nurses. Without their assistance and guidance, my visit would have been very problematic. With the completion of my four-floor stair climb (I am a disabled Vietnam Marine Vet – both lungs and heart destroyed by a derivative of Agent Orange), I was met and ushered into the dermatology department by Nurse Shawnee. My mood was bad, and I was temporarily exhausted from the climb. Needless to say, I do not enjoy hospitals. Thanks to Nurse Shawnee and her enthusiastic approach, things started to brighten up. She interviewed me, confirmed my status, assured me that all would be ok, and then turned me over to Nurse Cassandra. She verified the information collected to ensure the right patient and procedure.
Unfortunately, I am very claustrophobic, hyper-anxious, and very concerned about what is going to take place. Obviously, both of these individuals have experienced people of my caliber and were very understanding, supportive, and provided an abundance of assurance that things would go well. Their confidence helped me change my entire mood and skepticism.
Nurse Crystal soon joined the group, and all three began preparing me for the surgery. They made sure I was comfortable and especially warm with heated blankets and that I was positioned correctly for the surgery. As the surgery began, they kept me informed of the pain expectations and preparations for each insertion, reaction, and outcome. The doctor performed exceptionally, and of course her three nurses were above and beyond the Call of Duty. I've spent many hours under hospital care by numerous individuals and never received as much care, assurance, and “hand holding” as these 3 individuals provided.
The three hours of surgery were long and painful, but because of these professionals, it was one of the best hospital operations and stays that I have had in all of my hospital visits. The humor, camaraderie, and especially the caring were above and beyond the call of professional duty. Hopefully they will be on the same team for my next surgery in two weeks. I am forever grateful for the time and effort they provided for me during this stay at their department. God was with me thanks to their professionalism and care. Thank you!
