The patient smiled, squeezed Rolando’s hand, and told us that he had felt truly cared for, not just treated.
During my recent clinical rotation, I had the privilege of witnessing an extraordinary act of compassion and professionalism from Rolando Santana, a nursing student assigned to our unit. One morning, we received a patient who had been admitted for complications related to a chronic illness. The patient was anxious, in visible discomfort, and spoke very little English. While the assigned nurse began addressing the immediate medical needs, Rolando quietly knelt beside the patient, made eye contact, and, with patience and kindness, used both translation tools and nonverbal gestures to ensure the patient understood what was happening.
Throughout the day, Rolando went far beyond the expectations of a student. They explained each step of care in simple, reassuring terms, adjusted the patient’s pillow multiple times to ease pain, and even brought a warm blanket without being asked. By the end of the day, the patient’s demeanor had completely changed. The patient smiled, squeezed Rolando’s hand, and told us that he had felt truly cared for, not just treated.
It wasn’t just the clinical skills; it was the empathy, respect, and human connection that made the difference. Even as a student, Rolando demonstrated the heart of a nurse, balancing clinical knowledge with genuine compassion. The patient reminded all of us why we chose this profession: to serve people in their most vulnerable moments with dignity and kindness
