Just as the Daisy in the field is a display of the beauty and grace God gave it in creation, Nurse Natividad is likewise just such a beautiful Daisy in the garden of this place.
I would like to nominate Trauma Nurse Romana for The Daisy Award. Over the past few months, I have noticed some wonderful things about Romana. She has an ability to connect with any patient; the good, the bad, and the ugly. In just a few minutes she is conversing with the patient as if she has known them for a long time. She has this knack with her colleagues too. She talks to the patient keeping them aware of what is happening to them and tries to let them know they will be better because they came to this place. She talks them through what she and the other members of the team are doing to the patient’s body giving them the reasons why. She treats every patient, male or female, with dignity and respect. She also makes sure they are covered as soon as possible or has the trauma doors closed for those who are very embarrassed with all that is happening to them. Everything she does as a team member in the trauma unit is on time, exact, and professional while maintaining an atmosphere and behavior of human compassion and understanding. She has a great sense of humor and makes those around her feel comfortable and that they belong. Even when the patient is very rough and harsh she doesn’t get rattled or shaken up but continues on doing what is right. Nurse Romana knows how to handle difficult patients; de-escalating their loud and disruptive behaviors. She is flexible in even the roughest and most chaotic situations that arise in a trauma unit. It seems she lives by the motto, “I’m going to enjoy what I do even if no one else does.” She has often talked to me after a trauma case about the tragedy or sadness that is brought and how we ought to want our lives and the environments we all live in to be better. Even though she is genuinely concerned or moved by traumas, her level of compassionate professional care never seems to diminish. She has volunteered many times to accompany the doctor and me as we go to inform the family of the demise or pending demise of their loved one. In each of those cases, I have observed her sitting next to a family member and consoling them at the bad news we have just given that family. She willingly goes and gets them water or tissue as needed. I often greet staff as they come in at shift change and she is one I look forward to because she lifts my heart with her smile and positive attitude coming into work. I know that many times she is tired and not feeling up to another twelve hours of trauma, but she reaches down inside herself and gives what is right because she would expect nothing less from a nurse who might one day be taking care of her or a member of her own family. Romana Natividad is a true disciple and ambassador of all that Regional One Health stands for. Just as the Daisy in the field is a display of the beauty and grace God gave it in creation, Nurse Natividad is likewise just such a beautiful Daisy in the garden of this place.
