During my trainee days in the hemodialysis unit last July 2024, I had the privilege of being mentored by an exceptionally patient preceptor, Ms. Rona Artienda. This experience was not just about learning the technical skills required for dialysis; it was a journey of personal and professional growth. Ma’am Rona’s ultimate quality was her unwavering patience, which created a supportive environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. From the very first day I entered the unit, my preceptor took the time to explain complex procedures clearly, breaking them down into manageable steps. She understood that learning a new skill can be overwhelming, and she always encouraged me to take my time. When I struggled with certain tasks, she offered constructive feedback rather than criticism, helping me to improve without feeling discouraged. This approach fostered my confidence and allowed me to delve deeper into the intricacies of patient care. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of empathy in nursing. She demonstrated how to connect with patients, listen to their concerns, and provide reassurance. This aspect of my training was invaluable, as it taught me that the technical side of healthcare must always be accompanied by compassion.
