Being a nurse takes a special kind of person one who is kind, compassionate, empathetic, resilient, a good listener, has a sense of humor, pays attention to detail, and has very thick skin. This has been the most traumatic experience my family and I have ever experienced and she has helped in a tremendous way to ease our worries as best as she could. In fact, my mom's recovery has even stunned her team of doctors. Her progress continues to improve, and this is only day 5. From day 1, she told my family that there was a long road to recovery, but it can happen so don't count her out just yet. She is very attentive to my mom and her changing needs, so when I must leave to care for my father who is a cancer patient, I can rest assured that she is in GREAT hands at night. Although she provided me with the unit number to make as many calls as I felt were enough and ask to speak with her. Just as she promised, she came to the phone every time to give me updates. She has even accepted a change of assignment to accommodate my family. I am a registered nurse myself and the care that she gave my mother lets me know that there are still nurses out there with a "healers touch". She is extraordinary and very inspiring. As a new nurse, I pray I am just like her in this field. She has changed the way my entire family looks at the healthcare system. If the healthcare field continues to take on nurses like us who are willing to go the extra mile just to see their patients smile, they are off to a great start with improving patient outcomes.
