Rosie Reyes has become a pillar to the Emergency Department of California Hospital. When I first arrived as a nurse at Cal, Rosie was very quick to make me feel welcome. The way she interacted with her patients was and is something I've always admired. She is not only compassionate, caring and nurturing, but very empathetic with the patients and the care she provides. There are several situations I can recall where Rosie has truly gone above and beyond her care. There are several occasions I can recall where Rosie has managed distressed patients who are upset, crying or received traumatic news from the ER MD, and Rosie holds their hands, uses words such as "mija" or "mijo" to establish trust, rapport and ease fears. I vividly remember being assigned to trauma one night, received notice by her of a 30-something-year-old with a stab wound to the chest. Upon arrival, this young man was obviously distressed, upset and working himself towards a bad outcome. Rosie was present and assisting with the situation. She walked up to the head of the bed, instructed the patient to look at her in a firm but nurturing voice and talked him through the entire trauma process. In the end, we realized he was upset because he wanted to notify his mother. Rosie grabbed his phone and dialed his mother (never hindering the Trauma team) of course. One could immediately see the relief in the patient's fears. This is just one of the many situations I recall being witness to by this beautiful soul. Rosie embodies the care of The DAISY Foundation in that she not only excels clinically when caring for others; she is also very empathetic which in my opinion is the essence of the nursing profession. Others look to her for guidance, patients look to her for help and reassurance, and people like me just look to her for caring words.
Maya Angelou said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
I'm honored, have the great pleasure to say that I have been witness first hand when Rosie Reyes exemplifies this quote for those reasons and many, many more; I believe firmly Rosie is a true DAISY Nurse.
