The allotted amount of space is not enough to allow me to describe all of the deeds and acts of kindness and compassion that I have witnessed by Mr. Wachter during my stay on 5 East. Furthermore, the list of ICARE values can only begin to address the qualities that Mr. W has demonstrated during my stay at the Indy VA. Simple acts that would probably be seen as normal and ordinary to some, but are magnified when a person is in a low and vulnerable state of mind. I have witnessed on numerous occasions where Roy has treated every veteran with compassion, patience, and kindness, taking time for even the most trivial of requests and always with a smile. And while I don't know who J. Patrick Barnes was, I am certain that Mr. Wachter does great service to his memory. I am a patient here from out of state, in a "stall pattern" so to speak, waiting for admission to the Marion Substance Abuse Program. While speaking to another nurse, I expressed to her among other things that prior to my departure to Marion, I was in need of a belt because the one that I had arrived with was broken and frayed. I noticed that Roy was "ear hustling" at the time and thought nothing of it. She said that she would see what she could do, however, a belt was not to be found and this dilemma was a cause of moderate concern for me. Subsequently, Mr. W made the comment that I looked like about a 32-34 waist and I responded to the affirmative and thought no more about it. The very next day Roy pulled me aside in front of Ralph's Closet and produced a belt of my size that was in excellent condition. Apparently, he had procured this item from his very own wardrobe and wanted to ensure that it was a proper fit. He then informed me that he would stow the belt along with my personal belongings, this mitigating an issue that was causing me a fair amount of worry, allowing me to expend that mental energy to continue concentrating on my recovery. Simple acts like this, combined with his razor sharp wit and his priceless sense of humor, make him an invaluable member of the 5 East staff and a true DAISY Nurse. Thank you and may God bless you and may God continue to bless the United States of America.
