Rubi worked with one of many Spanish-speaking only patients on L&D with me over a weekend recently. This patient's medical care was extremely complex. The patient was young and had minimal support during her pregnancy. As a bilingual-bicultural L&D nurse, Rubi gave extraordinary care above and beyond traditional care. Because she is bilingual and bicultural, her care was more efficient, appropriate, and compassionate.

Beyond this Rubi spent extra time with the patient to address the patient's anxiety about an initially very unwanted C-section. She cared for this patient as if she were her sister. We had a very long and difficult shift that day and Rubi kept her composure and completed her complex nursing responsibilities for this patient admirably. We should do everything in our power to keep her at HMC for a longtime to come.
