B2 is a highly acute unit that caters for liver, lung and renal transplant patients, as well as the hepatobiliary service, and can be extremely stressful place to work, but Ruby takes this in her stride. She is a calming senior nurse; she also works in different roles of charge nurse and preceptor, which she does extremely well.
She is a proactive, critical thinking nurse, not only going above and beyond to assist her nursing colleagues, but also acts as a mentor to staff new to the unit. No matter how busy she is, I have never heard Ruby say "no" to anyone who needs help, - that word does not seem to exist in her vocabulary. She doesn't wait for others to ask for help, she simply gets in, and does what needs to be done with the minimum of fuss, which is in line with her humble personality.
She is always looking for ways to improve practice, and to her professional development.
Many of the patients and families that have stayed in B2 have spoken very highly of her high quality nursing care, friendly personality, integrity and empathy. The rest of the multidisciplinary team also holds her in high regard.
She is also a highly effective unit Magnet champion, often coming in on her days off to assist with Magnet activities.
Ruby personifies all the attributes we should all be striving to emulate in our everyday practice in improving quality of care delivered to the bedside.
