I just moved to 5 central from ICU last night, after being intubated for 6 days. I awoke with Ruby as my nurse feeling a little out of breath and Ruby stayed with me until respiratory could get there. Finally, everything seemed fine. Later, after getting up to the bedside commode, Ruby and the RT helped me back to bed. Suddenly, I couldn’t breathe. My oxygen dropped down to the 50’s with a mask on so Ruby called a code. I started panicking because I could not breathe. Ruby stood by my side, ran her hand on my back, and calmly told me to slow down my breathing. I started having an anxiety attack when all the people came into my room with a big red cart and all kinds of equipment. It seemed to me that Ruby didn’t get good feedback for calling a code, but thankfully, she didn’t care what others thought. She cared about taking care of me. I’m not sure I would have made it through it all without Ruby by my side. She is a nurse for the right reasons.
