August 2024 Honoree
Ruby Rodriguez 2024, RN
I wanted to take the opportunity to thank my nurse for being compassionate to my circumstances. I am an incarcerated patient healing, and upon discharge, I will be returning to jail. While I was here, Ruby attended to me. She was very patient with me, and because of the staff at the jail, I was very timid and fearful of my situation, thinking my care was just going to be passed by, but Ruby did not pass by me; she stayed to help me. She spent extra time with me, listening to my story and acknowledging me for the trials and dead ends in my life.
Ruby comforted me by assuring me that doors would open for new opportunities. She was very attentive to my needs but what I want to recognize her for is treating me like a person who deserves a 2nd chance at life. The conversations we had helped me heal not only physically but mentally as well. As she listened to my difficulty, she made me feel safe and normal. So, Ruby, if you get to read this, thank you for your kindness and your non-judgmental perspective. I am forever grateful for you.
