When the doctor came in, he advocated for me and expressed my fears. Once the procedure began, he advocated for my comfort. In all, he validated my concerns and made me feel like I had rights.
I had been waiting for a procedure to start chemo. I had gotten a port placed the day before very unpleasantly. My husband was upset because it looked like I wasn't going to get the procedure that day and was fussing. I was taken down at the very end of the workday. Rufus spoke with me and told me it would be a wait. I could hear other nurses laughing, having personal conversations and discussing their lunch. I realized Rufus was at the desk behind me not participating in their behavior. He was like a Guardian Angel watching over me. He would come over and check on me and make sure I was okay. If he walked away from the desk to see how much longer it would be, he would ask another nurse to watch me. When it got closer to time for my procedure, he came over and talked to me about what would be happening and listened to my fears and concerns about the pain the day before. When I was taken to the procedure room, he stayed near my head and let me know about everything going on. When the doctor came in, he advocated for me and expressed my fears. Once the procedure began, he advocated for my comfort. In all, he validated my concerns and made me feel like I had rights. He was compassionate, caring, and supportive. He made me feel human again. Rufus gave me dignity and value. He was the utmost professional. He exemplified what you say a DAISY Nurse should be. He will forever be my hero because of the exceptional quality of care and compassion he provided me.
