Rui was there to support the family, offer her expertise as a collaborating member of the multidisciplinary team, and went above and beyond to support the family throughout this challenging shift.
Rui has been a valued member of the NIICU for 27 years and holds a leadership position on NIICU East as a Clinical Nurse Expert. She exemplifies the title through her expertise at the bedside, in the PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) RN role, Charge RN role, and SDU role. Rui has a skillset that only comes with time, dedication, wisdom, and a willingness to continuously learn. Rui is a mentor, a leader, an advocate, and the definition of a true resource to our entire global NIICU.

Recently, there was an admission to the NIICU from the floor in which the patient was escalating quickly and critically ill. Rui availed herself to the parents as the Charge RN, who were understandably distraught. They had not slept in days and were having one the worst nights of their lives. Rui was there to support the family, offer her expertise as a collaborating member of the multidisciplinary team, and went above and beyond to support the family throughout this challenging shift. To highlight her expertise further, Rui was able to meet the family where they were and provide translation services as they both shared a common language. Rui took the time to ensure the family understood each step of the critical admission, the plan of care, the additional medical equipment needed, and the rationale for each step. She stayed past her shift to ensure the handoff to daytime leadership went smoothly, the plan of care was clear, and the parents felt heard in their concerns.

As I walked into this challenging and ever-evolving situation at the baby's bedside, I saw mom holding onto Rui as though she was her lifeline. Without Rui here, I'm not sure how successful we would be in establishing trust and truly hearing the parents' concerns. I am so grateful for Rui during each of her shifts and the roles she fulfills for the NIICU. However, I was truly humbled by her actions during this particular shift. She went above and beyond to support a family in need and ensured everyone shared the same mental model before leaving the unit and the family.
