June 2026 Honoree
Russell Hoagland, BSN, RN, CEN
I was delivering blood to the lab as part of my volunteer work with the American Red Cross. It was a very stormy Tuesday, and my shoe was slightly wet. As I was walking, it caught on the linoleum floor, causing me to trip. I fell into the wall and hit it quite hard.
I did not completely black out, but was stunned, shaken, and embarrassed. Within a minute, Russell Hoagland came to assist me. Russell was incredibly kind, patient, and understanding. He immediately provided first aid, carefully assessed me, helped me into a wheelchair, and transported me to the Emergency Department for further evaluation.
What stood out the most was not only his prompt response, but also the compassion and reassurance he showed during a very frightening and embarrassing moment. Russell’s professionalism and genuine concern made a difficult situation much easier to handle.
I am deeply grateful for the extraordinary service and dedication to patient care. It is because of nurses like him that patients and visitors feel safe, cared for, and respected.
