Rusty made us feel like we mattered. He listened to us and connected when we tried to share jokes and music.
Rusty was just the best. He provided excellent nursing for both body and soul while my husband was in ICU. Rusty was there for the hardest and scariest moments of initial recovery. He was great at assessing K's issues and pain. He knew what to say to K when he was struggling with the breathing tube and the chest tube was killing him. He explained things multiple times to K, not because K was stupid, but because he was in such pain he would literally forget from one hour to the next what was going on.
Rusty treated us like we were people. He was honest when we asked what to expect, but he was also encouraging letting us know that we would be able to get through the tough stuff. One thing he said that stuck with me was, "You will not believe the difference 8-12 weeks will bring." That told me we had a bit of time ahead of us until we could expect a full recovery, but that there was lots of hope. Rusty made us feel like we mattered. He listened to us and connected when we tried to share jokes and music. ICU was not a picnic! Rusty made it seem do-able. He was remarkably calm under pressure. He was never inconvenienced by our requests and always took time to explain the whys and whats of everything going on with the monitors, the beeps, and the symptoms.
At one point he shared a quick reference for the chambers of the heart and the arteries and valves, etc. He also shared exactly what bypasses were performed when we tried to remember them, but could not. We had lots of questions! He was so patient in addressing them. Rusty took an interest in us as people, not just patients. He nurtured. He encouraged. He watched...carefully. He listened. He was welcoming to our children and grandchildren who came to visit and could see the boost they were to my husband's mental health. They helped give him reasons to suck on the breathing tube, which he hated, but he would do it for the grandkids! Rusty never let a word of complaint cross his lips. He stayed calm under pressure, cracked jokes, and kept the mood light, whenever possible. He was kind and courteous when bathing my husband, or helping him with bathroom needs. He was just all-around amazing and wonderful. We sure counted our blessings for Rusty.
