Without hesitation Ruth came to see the patient and within just a short period of Ruth’s company the patient had become and remained calm for the rest of the day – amazing!
I have had the pleasure of participating in all dementia training that Ruth and her team have kindly organised in order to educate and further knowledge and skills around dementia. Ruth is ALWAYS very welcoming, professional, informative, kind and caring and encourages feedback.
Ruth will go above and beyond for all that need her help. I personally called upon Ruth during one of my placements, where we had a very agitated patient with dementia that we were struggling to calm – without hesitation Ruth came to see the patient and within just a short period of Ruth’s company the patient had become and remained calm for the rest of the day – amazing!
I personally, through Ruth’s training, have become more confident and developed knowledge and skills that I have been able to put into practice numerous times in my career, I have been able to deter challenging behaviours while being mindful of what I have learned, being aware of how the patient may be feeling and how to make the experience better for them, from the way I listen and speak to them, to implementing a practice that will further improve their experience, whilst also educating colleagues, family, friends and patient’s family and friends with my knowledge.
In July this year, following care I provided for a patient with dementia, I received a nomination for a DAISY Award by their very grateful family members. Furthermore, I went on to receive an award. I feel I cannot take full credit for this award, as it is through my dementia training that I was able to give this level of care.
Ruth's work and teaching also inspired me to do my communication assignment around
dementia, looking at three different techniques of communication, which gained me my highest mark to date – 85%. On one occasion whilst participating in Ruth’s training, Ruth was delayed and on her return to the room, explained that she had kindly helped a lost, breathless, elderly gentleman get to his cardiology appointment, ensuring he was ok, another shining example of Ruth going above and beyond in her kind, caring, empathetic and professional ways. Ruth is a credit to the hospital, as well as the patients, their families, and carers, always smiling. Ruth, you should be very proud of yourself!
