Ruth Sayas, RN – The Troy Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses – September 2009 – Troy Beaumont Hospital
Ms. Sayas is a teacher. Ruth has precepted numerous RN’s and students throughout her career at Beaumont. Those that she took “under her wing” felt that she could have done nothing more to prepare us for our journey. Ruth continues to mentor and guide long beyond the orientation period. Ruth is always one of the first in the unit to learn a new procedure, policy or piece of equipment, she then helps the rest of the ICU Team master these new skills.
Ruth demonstrates the Beaumont Standards daily without exception. She treats all members of the care team from housekeeping to physicians with respect. Ruth takes ownership of the care given in the ICU for all patients by being a leader in the Professional Nurse Council and as a Magnet Representative. Ruth places the highest priority on service to our patients, she frequently delays breaks or stays after shift to ensure that her patients are comfortable and well tended before she departs. Ruth’s attitude no matter how busy the unit is one of an exceptional professional, remaining positive, calm and upbeat even in the most difficult of situations.
There was a time when Ruth was not on the schedule to work on the unit but was here to prepare for Magnet. Around 5 pm the unit got very busy and Ruth stayed until 7 pm to help everyone out. She helped boost patients, answered call lights and helped with any kind of alarm going off, IV or otherwise.
ICU is very fortunate to have such a good efficient coworker such as Ruth Sayas.
