Ryan was amazing and truly advocated for both the patient and the family despite the discomfort and remained so compassionate throughout the day.
Ryan was involved in a very difficult donation case, where the LNOK was not in favor of the patient's decision to be a donor. This was the first in a DCD situation that DNA was upholding the patient's decision to donate, over the family's discomfort. There was still a lot of confusion amongst the hospital staff during this early stage of DNA being more consistent in their practice of honoring the patient's registry (first person authorization). Ryan was amazing and truly advocated for both the patient and the family despite the discomfort and remained so compassionate throughout the day. She communicated with all the teams caring for her patient and also acted quickly to maintain the option for donation when the patient became unstable two hours prior to the scheduled organ recovery. It was Ryan's quick thinking and good communication that allowed this patient's decision to save lives to be upheld.
