Ryan and I were assigned to the Heart Hospital PACU (there the RNs sort of share patients as there are only two RNs). I was aware of the patient's odd story that brought her to the Emergency Department. She woke with a black, cold hand. Very strange for a lady of her age without significant related history. I was not aware of much more about the patient as I was busy with my own patients. I just remember Ryan raising many questions to the patient and physicians. He stated, "Something is not right with this patient." Without knowing specific details, the patient was returned to the OR where a large clot was found in her aorta. While I do not know the patient status now, I was amazed at Ryan's interest and compassion for this patient. Clearly, she was very ill. Ryan did not rest for one second upon receiving this patient. He questioned, assessed, went above and beyond looking at the patient's history, labs, recent procedures, and diagnosis. The patient was returned to the OR in a timely manner, thus hopefully improving her prognosis.
Ryan, again, cared for this patient on her second time to the PACU, a couple of hours later. At this point, the patient was scared and quite emotional, as was her family. Not only did Ryan continue to give excellent care, but he also made time to address the emotional needs of the patient and family, displaying true Mercy values.
Ryan is a gem! I have other stories similar to this one after working with Ryan for a few years now. But, for sure, on this day Ryan needs to be recognized!
