Ryan’s character and compassion really are what make him an extraordinary nurse.
There are so many special things to say about Ryan. Our first night here was rough. J‘s oxygen kept dipping down below 90, well into the 80s; it was a really long night. The first thing that I noticed about Ryan that stood out was his compassionate heart. As a breastfeeding Mom of a 5-month-old baby girl in the hospital, there is always this deep sense that I will need to be her voice, I will need to make sure and advocate for her, but that was not the case with Ryan. From the get-go, he gave me the sense that we were in this together.
It was plain to see that Ryan genuinely cared, and his care didn’t end with J (the patient); it most graciously extended to me. I think it says a lot about anyone to be mindful of the physical and emotional well-being of the surrounding family and not just the specific individual (patient) under your care. From our very first night here, he has been nothing but attentive, diligently monitoring her, which put me at ease and lifted the burden even when he was not in the room. I could be sure he was paying attention.
While he cared for J, he not only did so diligently, but he did so with humility, which says so much about his character. He called in extra hands when he needed them, ensuring J had the best care, and I couldn’t help but notice the genuine heartfelt gratitude he displayed towards his fellow co-workers. There was no sense of competition. Ryan is clearly a team player, and it showed that he knew every department played an important role in J’s well-being. I know being a nurse is a job, but I dare say for Ryan, it’s a calling.
Ryan’s character and compassion really are what make him an extraordinary nurse. For someone to deal so wholly with the care of an individual and to also extend the care and respect towards those in the surrounding environment, family, and coworkers alike is a testament to this very award. Throughout J's life, we have been under the care of many exemplary nurses, but never have I felt so compelled to nominate someone for this award.
If he gets to read this, Ryan, thank you so very much for making us feel heard, safe, and not bothersome. We rested well every night you were on, knowing we were in the hands of someone who didn’t just care but with someone who was in this with us together. Bless you.
