Ryan was caring for a 13-year-old boy who was positive for COVID, had a new cancer diagnosis, and was Spanish speaking only. Due to his COVID status, siblings who required care from his parents, and the unknown COVID status of his family, he was in the room by himself, unable to fully communicate with staff. Ryan talked to him with an interpreter and found out his phone, his only way to communicate with his friends and family, was about to be dead and needed a charger. Ryan called around the PICU and tried to find a charger. When his efforts failed, he used a portion of his lunch break to go to the store and buy his patient an iPhone charger. Although this example does not speak to Ryan's exceptional nursing skills, it does exemplify how huge of a heart he has for his patients. His kindness, compassion, and desire to care for the whole patient (socially, emotionally, physically) were on full display that day. Co-workers like Ryan are one of the reasons I love working at LPCH.
