Ryan served as a primary caregiver on the treatment team for a complex patient. This patient had compartment syndrome requiring multiple surgeries which led eventually to amputation of his lower limb. Due to ethical dilemmas related to the patient's care, this patient created moral distress among the staff caring for him. In addition, this patient often required extra care due to his acuity. Ryan was vigilant in his care, never voiced any dissatisfaction about the extra acuity and workload this patient required. The patient was very modest and insecure about his body image. As a previously healthy male teen, this was a difficult transition to being cared for by others and having to be vulnerable during bathing and daily cares. Being a male nurse, Ryan was able to connect with this patient to build rapport as the patient and family transitioned to a new journey in their life. Ryan was able to connect with this patient's interests and provide distraction during difficult procedures and daily cares. The patient was able to feel comfortable about his care when Ryan was his nurse. The family also had cultural preferences that Ryan was able to meet and provided culturally competent care. In addition, the patient had a birthday while he was admitted to Ryan's unit and he knew the significance of this birthday for the patient and family. Ryan made sure to be at work on this day to make the patient feel special. Ryan is a true DAISY Nurse.
