Ryan is a ray of sunshine in the ED. Often patients come in under very stressful circumstances and need someone to listen to their concerns - some of them have the pleasure of having Ryan assigned as their nurse. I have witnessed Ryan be the calm in the storm many times. Recently an elderly couple came into the ED for the wife to be treated from a fall at home. She was brought in by EMS and the husband came in their car. The husband was very concerned about the wellbeing of his wife (we learned they had been married for 66 years during the stay in the ED) the tests/procedures that were being ordered and how long it would take to get some answers as to if anything was wrong. Ryan took the time to explain all tests/procedures/processes after the physician left the room in detail and in terms that the family could understand. While the patient was gone to have testing done, a daughter arrived. Ryan was called to the room several times by the family and by the patient to get additional information or to answer additional questions the patient and the family had about her care. Each time Ryan went to the room he took the time to explain everything, was very polite, and never rushed out of the room.
When it came time for the patient to be transferred, again Ryan went in after the doctor spoke to the family and explained the process to the patient and the family. Always being patient and kind. When the patient left via EMS to be transferred to another hospital - Ryan wished the family well and assisted the husband to the car in a wheelchair when Ryan saw he was struggling.
The daughter came back into the ED and came up to the admission window the next day to state how much she appreciated the care that Ryan gave both to her mom and dad while they were in our ED. This is just a small piece of what Ryan does in the ED every day......every shift. He often goes the extra mile to assist with patients, visitors, staff, EMS, or whoever he may see that is in need.
