I have spent more time in hospitals than I have anywhere else. I’m 15 years old, but I’ve lived through things most people will never have to face. I’ve had countless procedures, multiple open-heart surgeries, a heart transplant, infections, setbacks, fear, pain, and more nurses than I could ever count. When you’ve lived in a hospital this long, you learn something important. You can tell the difference between a nurse who is doing a job… and a nurse who has found their calling. That is exactly who Ryann is.

What amazes me the most is that she has been a nurse for less than two years. If nobody told me that, I never would have believed it. She carries herself with the confidence of someone who has been doing this for decades, but she still has something that many people lose over time—an incredible hunger to learn. She asks questions. She wants to understand. She wants to become better tomorrow than she was today. But what makes her extraordinary isn’t just how much she knows. It’s how much she cares. She never makes me feel like a room number or another task on a checklist. She walks into my room and makes me feel like I’m me first and a patient second. She notices the little things before anyone has to say them. She explains things instead of rushing through them. She listens. She remembers. She treats my family with kindness because she understands they are fighting this battle too.

I’ve watched nurses come and go over the years. I’ve met some incredible ones. But every once in a while, someone comes along who reminds you what nursing is supposed to look like. She is that person. If every new nurse entered this profession with her compassion, her curiosity, her work ethic, and the way she treats people, hospitals would feel less scary for kids like me. She’s proof that experience isn’t measured only by years. Sometimes it’s measured by your heart. I honestly believe she represents what every nurse should strive to become—not because she’s perfect, but because every single day she chooses to keep learning, keep caring, and keep showing up with compassion.

People often say nurses change lives. She already has. She has certainly changed mine. I hope she never loses that fire, because patients like me need nurses exactly like her. Thank you for seeing me. Thank you for believing that every patient deserves kindness. And thank you for showing the world what nursing can be at its very best!!
