I'm grateful to have had Sabrina working with me on Friday. I really appreciate her dedication and, even more so, her care.
I wanted to take the time to share that Sabrina Buehner, an RN on 7 Tower, did such an amazing job communicating with me regarding patient care. My patient had an echo ordered and an EKG. I had placed the orders shortly before IDT and raised that it was the plan for the day on Friday during IDT Rounds. She took ownership of that and showed critical thinking--understanding that echo would be his last test before discharge, which was likely to occur the following Monday. By 12:11 PM, she secure-chatted me to let me know it would get done after lunch and then that the EKG was done for me to interpret (patient had been having sinus bradycardia on telemetry for unknown reasons). She let me know when the echo was in the room, and I was able to follow up on the results promptly and share them with the patient. It would have been easy for her to just move on with her day. But Sabrina didn't and made the choice to be a proactive nurse and thought about how we could potentially get the patient an early discharge on Monday, which is more convenient for patients and their families. Think of the difference it makes to get out at 10 AM instead of 3 PM as you go to get your prescriptions and get set up in your home after being in the hospital for a week.
This is exactly the type of collaborative work we need at Self. It's nursing and medicine working together to make our patients whole again. That type of cooperation is hard to train. I see it comes from deep within us as we take ownership of the patients entrusted to us. I'm grateful to have had Sabrina working with me on Friday.
