Almost two years ago, my nurse manager was in a bus accident that necessitated her absence. Sabrina Smallwood Mason stepped up and took on all of that manager's duties as well as kept up with her own responsibilities. We were already down a manager; one person had left another management position. Sabrina was now responsible for all of the teams. She was one manager who took on the role of 3 managers. Can I tell you that she never skipped a beat? Timecards were submitted on time, evaluations were done on time, and she was always available should one of us have needed some help. She answered her phone whenever we called and offered solutions to problems we were having. When I worked on the weekends for extra shifts, Sabrina remained just a phone call away to offer her assistance when needed. Sabrina has even taken full assignments to help us out when staffing has been short; but she would still be available to help us if needed.

One time in particular, I was working on the weekend, and a patient needed to be transferred to a psychiatric unit outside of Children's National Hospital. I was very busy with other discharges. Sabrina helped me by submitting (information) to the patient's insurance online. That is just one of many times she has helped me without questioning or saying that she is too busy. Sabrina is so deserving of this award as she gives the true meaning of a leader. She gives of herself selflessly, and she always has a positive attitude. I am proud to call her my manager and appreciate all that she does.
