When Sachin was caring for her, we knew with certainty that she was in excellent hands.
Our mother’s recent visit to Tidal Health for what appeared to be a routine illness resulted in a lengthy hospital stay. As her condition deteriorated and the national surge in COVID caused the hospital to implement restrictions on visitation, she (and we) became totally dependent on the nurses. Carly and Sachin were simply amazing. These individuals put their heart and soul into caring for the patient. Each interaction, they were polite, calm, reassuring, and went out of their way to ensure her needs were met, despite her inability to communicate those needs to them. With visitation restrictions in place, we became reliant on routine telephone updates.
Carly quickly became our eyes and ears at the hospital. She was consistently there to provide a calm, reassuring, and thorough status via telephone. Her level of detail, patience, support, explanation of medical terminology, and overall manner was very calming and comforting during uncertain and often scary times. There were some days that I called Carly several times during a shift with questions or to request a status. She was consistently polite, professional, and never once gave the impression that I was bothering her or made me feel rushed. When I met Carly in person, her demeanor was identical to that I had experienced on the phone; pleasant, calm, reassuring, thorough, and supportive.
We were also able to meet Sachin during the period in which visitation was allowed. Sachin’s interaction with our mother as a person, as well as a patient, was exemplary. His bedside manner embodies what one envisions in a nurse. His offer to paint her fingernails, play her favorite music using his own personal device, and Facetime with us when visitation restrictions went into effect were just a few examples of insignificant things to many that meant the world to us. He went above and beyond any of our expectations to treat our mother with not only respect, but with dignity. When he was caring for her, we knew with certainty that she was in excellent hands.
On a national level, it appears that tensions are high, and morale is often low as hospitals struggle with the surge created by the pandemic. If it was the case with this care team, they never once let it show. These individuals interacted with our mother as if she were their own, showing compassion and care on a level that we honestly did not think existed. These professionals are an asset and a blessing to Tidal Health and the community served and are most deserving of this recognition.
