Our second DAISY Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Sadie Hutson during our Commencement on May 10, 2014. She joined the University of Tennessee College of Nursing Faculty as an Associate Professor in 2011. She developed our Undergraduate Nursing Honors? Program, teaches across programs, serves in multiple capacities, practices in the community, and has a very productive program of research. Dr. Hutson received the following three nominations for this award: (1) Dr. Hutson is very deserving of the UT CON DAISY Faculty Award. As a nurse educator, she is both an inspiration and a motivator. Her unpretentious nature and caring demeanor make her very approachable as a professor, which consequently helps to facilitate engagement and learning by students who get an opportunity to work with her. Dr. Hutson?s teaching strategies are innovative and student focused, and she works diligently to ensure students are afforded ample opportunities to understand and grasp important course content. She attends to students? questions and concerns and willingly provides feedback that encourages students to excel. She is a wonderful professional role model as a nurse educator, advisor, funded researcher, and women?s health nurse practitioner. Kindness and compassion are traits she easily exhibits with her students and her patients. (2) Dr. Hutson collaborated with Dr. Linda Mefford to incorporate a mock proposal review into the PhD quantitative research course to help students become familiar with this process from both a reviewer and a reviewee perspective. This assignment helped to promote the learning of some essential skills that are beneficial for future researchers. (3) Dr. Hutson has also personally mentored an undergraduate BSN student who recently was recognized in University of Tennessee?s Torchbearer publication for her work using digital storytelling with pediatric cancer patients. These are just a few of the many reasons that Dr. Sadie Hutson is worthy of this honor. Truly, she effortlessly epitomizes the qualities the DAISY Award represents.
