November 2022 Honoree
Safiya M Lane, RN
My daughter, M, was admitted to Labor & Delivery. Normally this would be a happy time since babies bring such joy to the world. M's circumstance was much different, only a few weeks prior did she find out that her baby had a lethal deformity and would not survive. She and the father of the baby, her boyfriend, had to make a decision that albeit no one would ever want to make. But they faced this grievous time with a strength that I am not sure I even have. They wanted a chance to hold their baby while he was still alive, and not in pain, even if that was for a fleeting moment. Once they made the heart-wrenching choice, they set a date for admission on the day of admittance, they met Safiya, her Labor & Delivery nurse who would be by her side throughout the hardest time in her life. Safiya showed M such compassion and caring throughout the ordeal, and will forever be in our heart's memories along with baby C. We know long hours go into the career of being a nurse, and many times I feel like they are the unsung heroes of hospitals. The personal sacrifice is tremendous, and along with the rewards of such a career, there is heartache they carry. We thank each of you from the bottom of our hearts, we are so grateful for you.
Thank you, Safiya M, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
