I was a patient in the out-patient Ortho Unit. Sally Cain was the nurse assigned to prepare me for surgery and to handle my recovery.
In assisting me with putting on the patient gown, Sally noticed some discolored lesions on my right upper back. Sally brought these lesions to my attention and recommended that I have them looked at. I had not checked out my back in a while, so this took me by surprise. Because Sally had felt that the lesions should be looked at, I saw my GP the following Monday.
I was referred to a dermatology PA, who took biopsies of the three lesions, and by less than three weeks later, I learned that all three lesions were melanomas. Surgery has been scheduled and the outcome is encouraging.
Sally saw something that was not right, and she said something. Her concern encouraged me to get the lesions checked out and treated.
As a nurse for 46 years, I recognize a Great Nurse, who was caring for the Total Patient, not just the surgical site.
