She made time to come over and not only offered her support and condolences but also participated in his Honor Walk.
I would like to nominate Sally Neer for the DAISY Award. Sally was my father's Oncology nurse. Sally always treated Dad and me with respect. It was obvious that she cared about Dad's well-being and care. Going to the doctor can be a stressful experience, especially with an Oncologist. Sally was always upbeat and easy to talk to, making the visits much less stressful. Sally made sure that we were prepared for our video appointments with the doctor and that we understood any follow up instructions. Sally discussed with Dad how he was doing and asked if he had any concerns. To me that was important. Sometimes, people defer to the caregivers rather than address the patient. It was a comfort having Sally as his nurse. I knew that if I had any questions or if Dad needed something, I could email or call her. She always replied in a timely manner. I had a high degree of confidence in her knowledge and abilities. Sally always provided Dad with a high level of care. Once when Dad had to have an unplanned iron infusion procedure that happened to be at lunch time, she called down to food service and had a lunch tray sent up for both of us. That was unexpected and very thoughtful of her. For several months, ACL came to Dad's house to do weekly blood draws to monitor his platelet counts. Sally made sure to call every week with the results and any necessary instructions. Dad was admitted into the VA's in-patient hospice unit late the day before he passed. After arriving at the unit after his passing, I asked them to notify Sally that he had passed because I knew she would want to know. She made time to come over and not only offered her support and condolences but also participated in his Honor Walk. The Honor Walk was such a moving experience, and I appreciated Sally's participation.
