Her unwavering compassion, emotional strength, and quiet professionalism provided not only excellent care but an extraordinary human connection.
We Care
From the very first moment we met Samah, it was clear how much she cares—not just for her patients, but for their loved ones as well. When G was recovering from pneumonia and pleurisy, Samah greeted him each day with a warm, genuine smile. He often remarked on how attentively she listened to him—maintaining eye contact, responding with understanding, and taking time to ensure he felt heard and respected. Her care created a sense of safety and dignity in what was already a very difficult time.

In G’s final days, her compassion became a lifeline. One night, Samah was on her first night shift at the hospital. Earlier that day, we were told G had contracted Influenza A and that his only chance of survival rested on wearing the NIV mask, with only a 20–25% chance of success. Throughout that night, Samah was a constant, compassionate presence. She positioned herself where I could see her from G’s bedside—always available, never intrusive.

Each time he struggled to remove the mask, Samah gently but firmly helped him to continue. Her calm encouragement allowed him to keep going and gave me the strength to stay present through unbearable hours.

We Value People
Samah’s care for G was deeply respectful and humanising. She treated him as a person—not just a patient—and showed the same dignity and kindness to me as his wife. Her emotional intelligence was extraordinary. On the following night, when G again fought the NIV mask, she responded every time with empathy and patience, helping him through the fear and discomfort with gentle reassurance.

When it became clear the next day that G was nearing the end of his life, Samah continued to show profound respect for both of us. That night, she again made herself quietly available, without intruding on our final moments. Her presence made me feel held and supported—never alone.

After he passed peacefully in my arms at 4:30 am, Samah was the first to offer her condolences. She did so with heartfelt kindness, showing that she truly values the people she cares for, even in their most vulnerable and final moments.

We Are One Team
Samah truly embodied the value of being one team—not only within the clinical team, but by including G and me in that circle of care. Despite it being her first night shift in the hospital, she seamlessly integrated into the team, working in full alignment with her colleagues and medical decisions. More importantly, she ensured that his care remained consistent, attentive, and deeply personal always.

She was proactive, always anticipating needs before they arose, and never allowed the challenges of a night shift or a complex situation to affect the quality of care she delivered. Samah’s presence and responsiveness made it clear that G’s needs—and my own—were a priority. She worked with quiet strength and purpose to ensure nothing was missed, no moment was overlooked, and no action was delayed. Her approach reminded me that being part of a team is not just about working alongside others, but about ensuring that every patient is cared for as if they were your own family.

In Summary
Samah Kika shared the last three nights of G’s life with me. Her unwavering compassion, emotional strength, and quiet professionalism provided not only excellent care but an extraordinary human connection. I will always be grateful for her presence in those final moments, and I truly believe that recognising her with this DAISY Award would honour the deep impact she had on both of us.

She represents the very best of what your Trust stands for:
She cares. She values people. She is one team.
