July 2026 Honoree
Samantha Claps, LPN II
Samantha Claps supports a variety of specialties, including Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Rheumatology, Plastics, Vascular Surgery, and Neurosurgery. She exemplifies MUSC's core values of compassion, collaboration, respect, integrity, and innovation.
Most recently, as a team, we have committed ourselves to focusing on patient experience for one specific specialty that was just above goal last year. While all other specialties in this pod exceeded Willingness to Recommend, this was the one specialty that continued to hover right on the line. Over the past few months, we have seen a steady increase in scores. During the last PMOC, the manager teams for this area asked what our secret was. I said, "Samantha Claps!"
We brainstormed at the beginning of the year as a team on action planning. We worked with the Patient Excellence Team for best practices, and she and the team didn't hesitate to hardwire these steps. She truly engages with patients and thoroughly explains what they should expect during their visit before the provider even enters the room. She explains that we have students, that the provider may have to perform an exam, explains the equipment that will be used during the visit, etc.
She will also put together little goodie bags with basic wound care supplies if a patient doesn't have the means to purchase the necessary supplies for dressing changes. She goes above and beyond to ensure every patient feels comfortable and heard. Two providers have also reached out recently to express their gratitude for Sam's support in the clinic.
