The patient was coming from an outside hospital with new-onset DKA. At the outside hospital, the patient did not receive labs. The patient received fluids, but the insulin drip was wildly incorrect. Sam was the nurse who took report from the outside hospital. Listening to the report, she realized the patient had not been correctly managed and the insulin rate was too high and extremely dangerous.
Sam educated the outside hospital and also had the Emergency Department Attending Physician contact the ambulance crew and get them to change the insulin rate. Thanks to Sam's quick thinking and advocacy, the patient arrived safely at BCH.
