It was Sam's quick thinking and trust in her intuition that led her to make the decision to involve all the appropriate resources, ultimately ensuring the safety and timely care of the victimized patient.
On Sunday, Sam was one of the assigned triage nurses for the ED. In the early afternoon, Sam began to triage a patient who was Spanish-speaking and was brought in by two gentlemen. It was not long into the triage of the patient that Sam called the charge nurse to request that they come to triage because she had very suspicious feelings that the patient was a victim of human trafficking. Sam explained that the gentlemen with the patient seemed very overbearing and that the patient herself seemed very timid and afraid to speak to the triage nurses. When Sam activated the iPad interpreter service, she made the decision to ask the gentlemen who were with the patient to leave the room so that she could speak to the patient one-on-one. After receiving a lot of pushback from the gentlemen, Sam was adamant that they leave the triage room so that the patient could speak to the triage nurse alone. Upon having the patient alone in the triage room, Sam was able to communicate to the charge nurse that she needed additional resources to aid in keeping the patient safe due to the fact that she felt strongly that the patient was a victim of human trafficking. Security, medical doctors, and the local PD were made aware of the situation. Upon further evaluation, it was confirmed that the patient was, in fact, a victim of human trafficking.

It was Sam's quick thinking and trust in her intuition that led her to make the decision to involve all the appropriate resources, ultimately ensuring the safety and timely care of the victimized patient. Thank you, Sam, for your hard work, critical thinking, and trust in your instincts to aid in the care of the patients you care for.
