My father was brought to RMH and immediately taken to the ICU to be stabilized. We were blessed for him to have come to 8 MICU. Sam was reviewing his chart and trying to find a next of kin to contact and my name was in the chart, but the phone number was wrong, and my father was unable to tell her anything. She recognized my last name because she works closely with my husband (a Carilion employee) and was able to find me in Carilion's email system and reach out to me. If Sam had not taken this extra step to ensure that someone was contacted, my father may have died in the hospital alone. Her care and attention brought me to my father and I was able to help him coordinate and understand his final choices. Sam was thorough in her explanations and care for my father. Sam is an exemplary nurse with an awesome attitude, and her initiative and empathy allowed me to see my father before he passed away.
