Sam went above and beyond, making sure all the requests were met.

I wanted to take a moment to write about a very special nurse to my Father (and really even more so our family). To protect my Fathers privacy (he is a very proud man), I am leaving it out but it in no way diminishes all Sam did for him and our family. Sam was caring for our Father, and he was extremely disoriented and reconditioned. No matter how we tried over the phone, he was becoming very frustrated and angry. His primary team was advocating for restraints in order to keep him safe (which we understood); however, Sam stepped in and advocated for our Dad by questioning this and, instead, asked to try basic daily comfort measures. She requested they order a normal diet for him rather than pureed foods (he was cleared by the speech team, but with all going on, they were hesitant to change) and said how he had told her he just wanted some real food. She helped arrange visitation from family (which was huge for both our Father and us), stayed with him (all while managing her other patients- I don't think she sat down that day), advocated for physical therapy for him, and talked with his team about getting something added at night he could take to help him sleep. Sam went above and beyond, making sure all the requests were met, including gathering staff to help assist and make sure he remained safe the entire time. My Dad showed an immediate improvement and, within three days, was walking around the unit unassisted and getting stronger than when he arrived. We understand that there are times when restraints are needed, but all that she did to go above and beyond for our Dad made us (and him) so appreciative. With the veteran population, we are sure it can be so hard to manage in states like our Dad was in, and she showed how much she cares for her patients and our nation's vets, and we were so thankful for her (and the entire step down unit) in all the amazing care she (and they) gave to our Dad.
