We knew our daughter was in the best hands she could be in.
This nomination comes from not one, but both parents, who were deeply moved by the care, kindness, and attention their daughter received during her stay in the PICU.
1st Nomination
First of all, I want to start by saying that every single person in the PICU was incredible. From the moment we entered the area, the entire team was very calming, informative, efficient, and (out of their way) helpful.
Having a child in the hospital, let alone the PICU, is something that I never imagined my family would have to go through, and I honestly feel that without the team you have there, our experience would have been very different. My husband and I (and our family at home, texting and calling for updates) never had to wonder about anything. Every nurse and doctor had the information on hand and shared it with us in such a way that our initial worry about where we were and what we were dealing with melted away. We knew our daughter was in the best hands she could be in.
One nurse in particular really stood out. The overnight nurse, Sam, created a cheerfully decorated board of all of my daughter's favorite things (that she uncovered from a 2-second conversation with my husband), pretty stealth! When my daughter woke up, she was so surprised, and it was the first time she seemed like herself since being there, which to us was priceless.
Sam was also so gentle that my daughter hardly noticed when her blood was drawn or when she had to slip an oxygen mask on her when her numbers dipped. Each afternoon, my daughter would ask us if Sam was going to be coming that night. She really looked forward to seeing her. My daughter is a very shy and reserved kid, but Sam knew how to reach her, and that is a very special quality.
2nd Nomination
My daughter was recently in the PICU. She is 8 years old and was upset and missing home, her brother, and her dog and cat. My wife and I are obviously concerned and worried about everything as well. Her night shift nurse, Sam, helped everyone feel more at ease. She answered all our questions and concerns with great detail. She paid extreme attention to detail in caring for her, from simple check-ins to IV checks and medicine administration.
One evening, when our daughter was sleeping, she decorated her room with pictures of all the things she likes. She woke up to everything and helped her feel more comfortable, and brought a smile to her face during a difficult time. All the nurses were great on the unit, but Samantha definitely made my daughter feel better with her bedside manner. The only bad thing was she didn't get to say thank you and goodbye because Samantha was off when she was discharged.
