Samantha then sat with the patient, held her hand, and spoke to her while they waited for her husband to arrive.
Samantha was caring for a patient with sepsis and bacterial pneumonia. The patient had become confused, and it was becoming more difficult for her to breathe. Samantha spent a good deal of time with the patient and family making the patient comfortable and supporting the family by addressing their concerns. It was very difficult for them to accept the decline in their loved one’s condition. On the second day of care, Samantha received report that the patient had signed a Do Not Resuscitate form the evening before and they were waiting for a transfer to hospice care. Samantha found the patient to be struggling for breath. She notified the primary nurse who medicated the patient with morphine, and they notified the family. Samantha then sat with the patient, held her hand, and spoke to her while they waited for her husband to arrive. “Don’t worry, your husband is on his way in to see you.” The husband was able to arrive as the patient took her last breath. He expressed his gratitude to Samantha for staying with his loved one until he arrived. He felt so relieved that she was not alone. Samantha showed great compassion and “went the extra mile” for this family.
