Sam got him out of bed and gave him a ride out of his room in a wheelchair and then brought in the watercolor set to encourage him to do activities in his chair rather than stay in the bed all day.
Sam goes out of her way to support both the staff on the unit and to provide exceptional patient care. She is cheerful and caring to her patients, even if the day has been a crazy mess. She offers to help other RNs or NAs with tasks even before being asked. If I mention I have an IV to do, or a foley to place, or a skin assessment to do, Sam is the first to look up and smile and offer to help.
In emergency situations like a rapid or a code, she is always among the first to jump up and help even when it is not her patient. Her caring and compassion go above and beyond for her patients, as I have witnessed her put together little care packages for patients from the gift shop, buy birthday balloons and streamers for patients who are stuck celebrating their birthdays in the hospital, go out of her way to order specific dietary requests for patients, and most importantly be proactive in managing her patient care and advocating for her patients to the MD team.
Sam is a nurse that I would want to take care of me or any of my loved ones without question, because I know she goes the extra mile and gives 110% every day. The other day she brought in a whole watercolor set for one of our oncology patients who has been admitted for almost 2 months due to post-op complications and was clearly feeling depressed and discouraged. Sam got him out of bed and gave him a ride out of his room in a wheelchair and then brought in the watercolor set to encourage him to do activities in his chair rather than stay in the bed all day. The joy that she brought this man was so palpable. I went in the room to fix his IV pump and asked him how his wheelchair ride was and he gave the biggest smile I've ever seen from him and said, "It was a little slice of heaven," as he painted with the watercolor set she had given him. This is only one example of the many times Sam has gone above and beyond for patients, and she is truly the type of nurse that exemplifies UHS standards. I only wish there were more nurses like Sam and I respect and look up to her as a co-worker and human being.
