In the last few months of my grandmother's life, she was frequently in and out of the hospital. There were a lot of hard days while she was here. After my grandmother passed away, I saw that she had a half-filled out DAISY nomination for a nurse who made a difference in one of her stays here, and Sam Smith was that nurse. My grandmother appreciated the compassion and kindness that Sam showed her one day. Sam took time out of her busy day and brought in nail polish to give my grandmother a manicure (her first-ever manicure!) and a spa day. I remember this day because it was one of the first times my grandmother called me saying that she had a wonderful day. Out of appreciation from my family and in my grandmother's honor, I wanted to complete the nomination for her. Sam is definitely a nurse who exemplifies continued compassion and kindness to not only my grandmother but to all her patients.
